Balboa coffee landscape

Geographic Location

Balboa, known as "the flowery balcony", is a traditionally coffee-growing municipality in the department of Risaralda, located in the heart of Colombia's Coffee Triangle. With altitudes around 1,540 m.a.s.l., temperate Andean climate and deep volcanic soils, our region brings together ideal conditions to produce world-class speciality coffee.

Balboa is within the Coffee Triangle in the department of Risaralda, a region with coffee tradition and mountain landscapes ideal for quality coffee.

Altitude

1,300 - 2,000 m
~1,540 m.a.s.l.

Optimal range for high-quality arabica coffee, favouring slow plant development and flavour complexity. Balboa farms with special lots around ~1,540 m.a.s.l.

Temperature

17 - 23°C
Ideal average

Moderate temperatures with cooler nights help improve bean density and profile. Temperate climate typical of the Andean zone with high humidity.

Precipitation

1,800 - 2,800 mm
Annual

Distributed in two seasons (supports two main harvests per year). Good rainfall distribution is important for flowering and cherry filling phases.

Soils

Volcanic
pH 5.0 - 6.5

Volcanic and igneous origin soils, deep andosols, well-drained and relatively fertile. Suitable conditions for coffee provided soil nutrition management and erosion control are carried out on sloped areas.

Varieties

Laurina, Cenicafe 1
Castillo

Specialised varieties grown on our farm: Laurina (low caffeine content, sweet and floral profile), Cenicafe 1 (rust-resistant, high productivity) and Castillo (developed by Cenicafé, disease resistance and excellent cup quality).

Harvests

2 per year
Oct-Dec / Apr-Jun

Main harvest between October-December and secondary harvest (mitaca) between April-June, typical of these altitudes in Colombia.

Cultivation Practices

Sustainable agroforestry management

Mixed systems with partial shade (guamo, banana, citrus)

Adjusted planting densities and technical pruning for renewal, balance and productivity of the crop

Fertilization according to soil analysis

Integrated pest and disease management

Erosion control on slopes and hillsides

Local technical support programmes
